Berne was nominated for both her contribution to science over many years and for her leadership in education and training.

As Head of School at the National School of Healthcare Science, Berne has raised the profile of healthcare science in Health Education England and other organisations, and has created opportunities for the discipline to be represented where previously it was excluded.

Her contribution in terms of leadership was particularly recognised during the period since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when she ensured everyone felt supported, included and able to flourish despite the difficult circumstances.

Berne reflected:

‘I was very surprised but delighted to receive this award. I felt humbled to have my everyday work recognised in this way. Huge thanks to all my wonderful colleagues that my work depends on.’

Berne Ferry is an Associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford and has been Head of School at the National School of Healthcare Science since April 2017. Her background is as a consultant clinical scientist and clinical lead of the Clinical Laboratory Immunology service at the Oxford University Hospital Trust (OUH). She was also the Lead Scientist in the Oxford University Hospitals Trust from 2012 to 2017.

Green Templeton congratulates Berne on this recognition.
